Lavender Note

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is an olfactory chameleon. While in cheaper products it often only provides the clean, slightly soapy note, high-quality lavender possesses a multi-layered signature: It is aromatic-herbaceous, subtly sweet, has a hint of camphor (which provides invigorating freshness), and carries a woody, almost hay-like depth. In niche perfumery, it is valued for its calming, balancing effect that reduces stress while simultaneously creating an incredibly elegant, clear structure. It is the soul of serenity and purity.

The precious Lavender oil is obtained through steam distillation of the flower spikes. The quality is strongly influenced by the altitude of cultivation.

• Lavande Fine (True Lavender): The highest quality traditionally comes from the high plateaus of Provence (France). This lavender grows at high altitudes and yields the finest, most floral, and complex oil with the lowest camphor content—ideal for the most discerning perfumery.
• Lavandin: A hybrid plant that is more productive but olfactorily simpler and more camphorated. Niche fragrances prioritize the complex, fine oil of Lavande Fine.

Lavender is the indispensable anchor of the Fougère family (alongside coumarin and oakmoss), where it provides the fresh, aromatic opening. However, in niche perfumery, it is interpreted in modern ways:

• Gourmand Scents: It is combined with vanilla, coffee, or caramel to create an unexpected, spicy-tart freshness (e.g., lavender macaron).
• Woody Scents: It serves as a cool contrast to warm woods or oud to make the composition airier and more elegant.
  Its aromatic depth makes it the perfect partner for juniper, pepper, and vetiver.

High-quality lavender smells clean and floral-herbaceous, without being aggressively sharp or medicinal. A sign of craftsmanship is when the woody and slightly hay-like nuances of the lavender are still noticeable in the heart note and balance the composition—it should not only serve as a fleeting opening note. If the lavender holds deep and long, soothing the other notes, it is an indicator of the expensive and complex Lavande Fine and testifies to the overall blend's quality.
