Bergamot – the precise radiance of the citrus world, told without decorative luster

Bergamot is the most sovereign of all citrus raw materials. Not a cheerful fruit, not a light colonial aroma – but a complex, bitter-green, elegant distillate that combines freshness with structure. It comes almost exclusively from Calabria, where the special microclimate between sea, wind, and nutrient-rich soil produces an aroma that remains unrivaled worldwide.

The origin – why bergamot only thrives in a few places

Bergamot grows almost exclusively on the Ionian coast of Calabria. This is where the best quality is produced – intense, green, clear, with a characteristic, almost tea-like undertone.
Lower-quality wines from other regions often show less depth: more lemon, more acidity, less elegance.

Extraction – a craft requiring enormous precision

Unlike many flower or wood raw materials, bergamot is cold-pressed . Today this is mostly done mechanically, but traditionally it was done using the famous sfumatura method.
– the shell is manually scored,
– the oil slowly squeezed out,
– the result is an extremely pure, fresh and at the same time deep bergamot oil .

The oil contains complex molecular groups – limonene, linalyl acetate, linalool – which are responsible for the typical, almost imperceptible bitterness.
CO₂ extractions exist, but they produce a denser, less sparkling profile.

The qualities – from sparkling to tart green

Early harvest
Fresher, brighter, more citrusy. Ideal for transparent unisex perfume compositions.

Medium harvest (classic)
Perfect balance: green, bitter, delicately floral. The highest quality and most versatile form.

Late harvest
Mature, heavier, almost tea-like. Ideal for niche fragrance structures with darker woods, resins, or herbs.
