D:SOL reimagines Mediterranean scents: as an interplay of light, landscape, memory, and material. With AZURIS, this evolves into a modern unisex niche fragrance that understands freshness not as an effect, but as an atmosphere.
Between Berlin and Mallorca, Dennis Werner is developing a distinct language for modern perfume artistry with D:SOL. With the new AZURIS Eau de Parfum, the brand turns its gaze toward the vastness of the blue sky—and shows just how much depth a fresh unisex niche fragrance can possess.
The Mediterranean is one of perfumery's great spaces of longing. Citrus fruits, aromatic herbs, salty air, warm stones, and sun on the skin are images we almost automatically associate with the south. It is precisely for this reason that it is difficult to develop something truly independent from them. D:SOL consciously chooses a different path. The independent perfume house was founded by designer and creative director Dennis Werner and emerged between Berlin and Mallorca. The focus is not on the most realistic depiction of a place possible, but on the question of how the Mediterranean feels.
Light over a landscape, warm air between dry herbs, a stone that has stored the day's heat, late afternoon shadows, or conversations at dusk become the starting point for a fragrance idea at D:SOL. The brand is less interested in the individual image than in the relationship between these impressions. From them, an atmosphere is created—and from that, ultimately, perfume artistry.
This very approach is what makes D:SOL interesting for us at scent amor. Because niche perfume here is defined not by maximum volume, but by idea, attitude, and a recognizable signature.
Dennis Werner – from design to perfume artistry
Dennis Werner comes from a design background. This shapes his way of thinking about fragrance. Instead of developing a composition exclusively through a classic fragrance family or a predetermined list of notes, he is interested in the relationship of different elements to one another: light and shadow, warmth and coolness, landscape and material, memory and present.
Mallorca played an important role in the creation of D:SOL. For Werner, however, the Mediterranean is not a travel destination to be reproduced as accurately as possible in olfactory terms. It is rather the starting point of a personal world between Berlin and the south. Light, plants, landscape, materials, people, and a different sense of time combine to create an imaginary Mediterranean atmosphere. The D:SOL fragrance collection therefore does not want to send olfactory postcards, but to create sensations.
Beyond the Obvious – beyond the obvious
A central idea of D:SOL is "Beyond the Obvious." Dennis Werner is not interested in what is purely trend-driven, but in what has longer endurance: a memory, the structure of a material, the delicacy of a plant, or the changing light over a landscape.
This attitude fits a modern vision of niche perfumery. A luxurious niche perfume does not have to be louder or more opulent. Luxury can also lie in precision, an unusual idea, and a refined fragrance composition. That is exactly where we find high-quality perfume artistry.
Atmospheric Thinking – first the atmosphere, then the fragrance
D:SOL calls this creative process "Atmospheric Thinking." At the beginning, there is no finished list of fragrance notes. Instead, light, climate, landscape, plants, materials, human presence, memories, and time are considered. From the relationships between these elements, an atmospheric narrative emerges, which is subsequently translated into fragrance together with the respective perfumers.
A classic brief might demand a Mediterranean scent with citrus, herbs, and woods. At D:SOL, the question is more: Which connection between light, temperature, vegetation, and material creates exactly the feeling that should be preserved in a fragrance? This allows familiar raw materials to be used without automatically creating a familiar scent.
Contrast as part of the D:SOL signature
An essential principle at D:SOL is "Duality in Contrast." Brightness meets depth, freshness meets warmth, transparency meets wood, resin, or mineral facets. These opposites can exist simultaneously. A green note can appear dry and woody, a fruity facet cool, a transparent composition can still possess depth.
Top, heart, and base notes are also understood less as strictly separated layers. On the skin, the proportions shift. A long-lasting fragrance can be convincing, but longevity alone does not make a good composition. The decisive factor is its own identity.
The Mediterranean fragrance world of D:SOL
D:SOL describes different atmospheric forms of expression within its world: Open Light stands for transparency, light, and vastness, Living Green for botanical movement, Solar Ground for warmth and mineral quality, and Deep Shades for deeper, slower, and more sensual facets.
These areas are not rigid fragrance families. Fragrances such as SOMBRA, TERRAM, HERBES, TESORO, CISTUS, ISLETA, or LÁDANO show different perspectives on the same Mediterranean world. With D:SOL MMXVI AZURIS Eau de Parfum, a new facet is now added.
AZURIS – back to blue
Even the name AZURIS combines two worlds: Azure and Iris. Azure stands for the clear, seemingly endless blue of the open southern sky. The orris root provides an exciting counterpoint: earthy, green, woody, and quiet. In between lies the horizon—that fleeting point where sky and distance seem to merge.
AZURIS is inspired by the vastness of the southern sky and the Mediterranean. Clear light, drifting clouds, and boats on the horizon are not reconstructed as a concrete scene, but translated into a feeling of openness and a shift in perspective. "Back to blue" is the idea behind the fragrance. Yet AZURIS is not a classic blue fragrance. Here, blue does not simply stand for aquatic or clean freshness, but for space, clarity, and freedom.
Michael Nordstrand and the Blue Sky Brief
AZURIS was composed by perfumer Michael Nordstrand. The starting point was a so-called "Blue Sky Brief"—a briefing that leaves the perfumer great creative freedom. Dennis Werner did not ask Nordstrand to reinterpret a well-known fresh fragrance, but to translate the feeling of a wide blue sky into perfume.
At the center, an unusual combination of pear and orris root was created. The pear brings brightness and transparent fruitiness, while the orris root sets a green, earthy, and woody structure against it. It is precisely this contrast that gives AZURIS its character and demonstrates the D:SOL signature.

Fresh, salty, green – and consciously different
The opening of AZURIS combines green mandarin, basil, pink pepper, ginger, and sea salt. The mandarin provides brightness, basil provides aromatic green, and ginger and pink pepper provide movement and fine spice. The sea salt gives the composition a dry, almost mineral contour.
In the heart, pear, orris root, angelica seeds, Mediterranean cypress, and gray myrtle meet. The pear remains light and transparent. The orris root does not show that powdery side often associated with iris, but its green, earthy, and woody texture. Angelica, cypress, and myrtle reinforce the vegetal and Mediterranean character.
In the base, incense cedar, violet leaves, Nootka cypress, musk, and oakwood provide dry, airy depth. The woods do not make the fragrance heavy, but give it structure. This creates a noble fragrance composition that appears fresh and salty-fruity, yet possesses enough depth not to fall into the pattern of an ordinary summer fragrance.
A modern unisex niche fragrance
AZURIS is a consistent unisex perfume. The classic categorization into women's fragrance or men's fragrance falls short here. The decisive factor is rather how the green, salty, fruity, and woody elements develop on one's own skin. Precisely for this reason, it is worth testing AZURIS not just on a paper strip. The skin chemistry with perfume can influence whether pear, orris root, salt, or dry woods emerge more strongly.
Anyone wanting to find a signature fragrance should give such a composition time. AZURIS is neither a classic citrus scent nor a typical aquatic, neither a powdery iris fragrance nor a sweet fruity scent—but a unisex niche fragrance that combines freshness with character.
Why D:SOL fits with scent amor
At scent amor, we do not choose brands based on how loudly they appear in the market or how many new products they release. We are interested in whether a brand possesses its own attitude, whether its fragrances show a recognizable signature, and whether there is more behind a collection than just a good marketing story.
D:SOL fulfills exactly these criteria. The brand combines design, Mediterranean inspiration, and modern niche perfumery into a clear identity. With AZURIS, D:SOL consistently continues this idea. Green mandarin, sea salt, pear, orris root, and cool woods do not result in yet another pleasing blue scent, but an independent interpretation of freshness, vastness, and openness.
Anyone wishing to buy niche perfume and consciously look for an exclusive niche fragrance beyond familiar mainstream patterns should get to know D:SOL. Through perfume samples or a discovery set, the collection can first be discovered in peace on one's own skin.
