Husen Baba, Oud without compromise and OH MY SHISHA! – why AZMAN is one of the most exciting voices in modern niche perfumery from Dubai
There are perfume brands that use a location as decoration. And there are houses whose origin is truly embedded in their fragrance language. AZMAN belongs to the second category. The niche perfume brand founded by Husen Baba in Dubai in 2021 combines the centuries-old fascination of the Middle East with oud, frankincense, resins, and precious woods with a distinctly international understanding of modern haute perfumery. This is precisely where its strength lies: AZMAN does not try to appear European, nor does the house cater to the usual notions of what an "Arabian perfume" should smell like.
The name AZMAN broadly means "hours" or "moments" in Arabic. This is more than just a pretty explanation for a logo. Husen Baba conceives of perfume as condensed time: as a memory of an encounter, a night, a place, or a mood that cannot be fully described but suddenly becomes present again through a fragrance. This idea runs through creations such as TWO MINUTES AFTER THE KISS, MAJNOON, NAKED FOREST, RISK, NOCTURNAL IMMORTAL, or CROWN OF FIRE – and it takes on a particularly sensual, urban, and surprisingly playful form with the new AZMAN OH MY SHISHA! Extrait de Parfum.
Husen Baba – from image to invisible narrative
Behind AZMAN Perfumes is not an anonymous investment apparatus, but a very personal biography. Husen Baba grew up in Mumbai and later moved to Dubai. His professional world was initially not perfumery, but advertising, art direction, and creative communication. He worked as an art director and creative director for international agencies, developing campaigns for fashion, luxury, and consumer goods brands. Among the names that shaped his career was Harvey Nichols. His work received international awards; at the same time, it honed something that is at least as important for AZMAN today as olfactory knowledge: an eye for staging, dramaturgy, proportion, and a good story.

This experience continues to shape AZMAN. The fragrances are often opulent, but rarely one-dimensional. They work with contrasts, breaks, and materials that cannot be fully deciphered immediately.
Baba's growing interest in perfume eventually led to an encounter he describes as a decisive impulse in his development. At a casual dinner, he met Frédéric Malle. This led him to Grasse, the historical center of French perfumery. There, Husen Baba delved deeper into fragrances and composition, completing, among other things, training at the Galimard Studio des Fragrances. The man who had previously thought of stories in images, typography, and campaigns became an Artistic Director whose medium was suddenly invisible.
This is precisely what makes the brand interesting. Baba is not the classic perfumer who writes all the formulas himself. He sees himself as a Creative Director and curator of olfactory ideas. He develops images, moods, and themes and then specifically seeks out perfumers whose signature can translate these visions into fragrance.
Why Oud at AZMAN is not just a marketing note
At the heart of the brand is Oud. This might initially sound unsurprising for a perfume house from Dubai. But this is precisely where the difference begins. In large parts of Western luxury perfumery, oud became a code for years: a dark woody signal meant to communicate exoticism, price, and supposedly oriental opulence. Often, only a smoothed-out idea of the actual character of high-quality oud wood remained, surrounded by amber, vanilla, saffron, or leather.
Husen Baba, however, is interested precisely in the multifaceted nature of this extraordinary material. Oud can be smoky, medicinal, balsamic, animalic, dry, leathery, fruity, or almost floral. Origin and processing significantly alter its character. Therefore, oud at AZMAN can be the main actor, the foundation, the shadow, or the dark current of a composition.
This approach also explains why AZMAN works with very different perfumers. Personalities such as Cristiano Canali, Prin Lomros, Nutt Wesshasartar, Christian Carbonnel, Antonio Gardoni, Julien Rasquinet, and Jerry Lin have already composed for the house. For OH MY SHISHA!, Sultan Pasha now joins them. Baba does not seek the style of a single in-house perfumer. As Creative Director, he brings together different signatures through theme, emotion, and material – varied, but with a recognizable identity.
Especially at a time when more and more niche perfume brands are launching entire collections in the shortest possible time, this approach seems almost old-fashioned in the best sense. It is not the number of new releases that is decisive, but whether a fragrance justifies its own story.
From TWO MINUTES AFTER THE KISS to RISK – fragrances like scenes from a film

Even the debut AZMAN TWO MINUTES AFTER THE KISS showed how the house wants to shift classic themes. Cristiano Canali combines rose and oud not simply into another oriental rose-oud, but builds a complex composition of Turkish rose, frankincense, cardamom, myrrh, beeswax, sandalwood, vetiver, leather, and Laotian oud.
MAJNOON by Prin Lomros goes much more uncompromisingly into the dark, animalic, and intense direction of oud. RISK, created by Antonio Gardoni, arose from Husen Baba's desire for an ultimate homage to oud – not pleasing, but as a complex matrix of oud, animalic, floral, earthy, and leathery facets. With NOCTURNAL IMMORTAL by Julien Rasquinet and CROWN OF FIRE, a collaboration with Jerry Lin, the house's signature was further expanded.
The fragrances thus truly possess different personalities, instead of merely multiplying a once successful basic structure with new names. This is precisely what distinguishes serious niche perfumery from brands where only packaging and storytelling are meant to create an impression of individuality.
OH MY SHISHA! – the scent of a night that needs no end as Extrait de Parfum
With AZMAN OH MY SHISHA! Extrait de Parfum, the house now takes its idea in a different, more playful direction. The fragrance, introduced in 2026, was composed by Sultan Pasha, a perfumer known within international independent perfumery for opulent, material-rich, and often uncompromising creations. For AZMAN, it is the first collaboration with him – and the connection seems exceptionally logical.
Because OH MY SHISHA! does not try to photorealistically recreate the smell of a water pipe. Rather, the fragrance translates the atmosphere of a shisha lounge into perfume: dim light, long conversations, sweet smoke, tea, fruits, warmth, spices, and that peculiar feeling that a night can exist outside of normal time for a few hours.
The shisha thus becomes not a gimmick, but a stage.
Green, fresh, and unexpected – before the smoke arrives
Even the opening defies the expectation of a heavy tobacco gourmand perfume. Bergamot, tea, mint, and apple create a surprisingly fresh, almost green tension. Smoke is already present, but it initially lingers in the air rather than settling heavily on the skin. This gives the fragrance space: it begins not as a sticky cloud, but like the opening of a door.
Then AZMAN OH MY SHISHA! becomes darker, denser, and more seductive. A distinct shisha accord combines with cherry, almond, anise-like spices, iris, and licorice. However, Sultan Pasha counters with enough green, spicy, and smoky tension. Cherry, almond, and tobacco never come across as blandly sweet; instead, a mix of gourmand temptation and dry darkness emerges.
The cherry, in particular, is important. It gives the fragrance that juicy, fruity reminder of flavored shisha tobacco, without pushing OH MY SHISHA! into the now overcrowded category of sweet cherry perfumes. Almond and licorice also do not act in isolation, but merge with smoke and spices to create an increasingly dense atmosphere.
When smoke suddenly gains texture
The composition becomes particularly interesting in the base. Sandalwood and vetiver provide structure, while musk and amber create warmth. Honey and a milk accord add creamy sweetness, while tonka and spices continue the gourmand aspect. But underneath are oud and cade – two materials that prevent OH MY SHISHA! from becoming too comfortable.
Cade has a striking smoky, sometimes almost charred effect. Oud brings depth and that dark resonance that is part of AZMAN's DNA. Thus, the smoke not only gets a smell, but almost a surface.
AZMAN and Sultan Pasha consistently rely on contrasts: fresh versus warm, green versus gourmand, milky versus smoky, and fruity versus woody. These very contrasts make the fragrance more exciting than a conventional mix of tobacco, honey, and sweet spices.
With 22 percent fragrance concentration, OH MY SHISHA! is designed as an Extrait de Parfum. However, what is crucial is not the number alone, but its development, its recognition value, and the ability to carry an idea beyond the initial spectacular impression.
Sultan Pasha – the right perfumer for AZMAN's bolder side
Sultan Pasha aligns with Husen Baba's understanding of niche perfumery because he hasn't become known for smoothing out fragrance ideas for the largest possible target groups. His works often move between classical perfumery culture, oriental materials, vintage allusions, and a very personal fragrance aesthetic.
He treats raw materials not merely as interchangeable items within a list of fragrance notes, but as materials with weight, temperature, and texture. In AZMAN OH MY SHISHA!, this is particularly evident in the transition from tea, herbs, and fruit to the smoky-creamy base.
The fragrance therefore tells less about the object "shisha" than about the feeling of a night of sweetness, smoke, warmth, voices, wood, and spices. And within that lies that original AZMAN idea: a moment should not be described, but preserved.
Dubai without a gold facade and postcard kitsch
AZMAN is also a good example of how modern perfumery from the United Arab Emirates is changing. In the European view, Dubai is still often reduced to gold, superlatives, and ostentatious luxury. Husen Baba uses this world as a cultural background, but not as a stereotypical backdrop.
His own biography is international: Mumbai, Dubai, the global advertising world, fashion and luxury, travel, and finally Grasse. Accordingly, the fragrances are also cultural hybrids.
Oriental materials in AZMAN Perfumes do not become folklore, and French perfumery tradition does not become a mere seal of quality. This very tension makes the house interesting for lovers of special unisex niche fragrances.
It is also remarkable that Husen Baba does not fully cater to the Western desire to make oud as polite and agreeable as possible. The brand appeals to people who truly want to experience oud – with its dark, dry, animalic, or smoky sides – while also expecting a modern composition that remains genuinely wearable.
Why AZMAN fits scent amor
This is precisely why AZMAN belongs in a curated selection like that of scent amor. For decades, Georg R. Wuchsa has not sought out brands that merely generate reach, but rather perfumes with an independent idea, compelling raw materials, and a signature that can be discussed.
A brand like AZMAN does not work through an interchangeable "everyone likes it." It demands curiosity.
AZMAN OH MY SHISHA! exemplifies this. Gourmand lovers will find honey, almond, cherry, and milk, but also tea, vetiver, cade, smoke, and oud. Those who love oriental perfumes will recognize familiar materials and simultaneously experience them in a distinctly contemporary, urban composition.
This is niche perfumery not as a price category, but as a decision for character.
For scent amor, this is precisely what is crucial. In a market where more and more products are labeled "niche" despite being calculated for the broadest possible appeal, selection and experience are needed. An exceptional perfume does not become relevant because it is expensive, limited, or visible on social media. It must have something to say olfactorily.
A perfume for people who have smelled enough already
The market is full of novelties that are staged as revolutions for a few weeks and then disappear just as quickly. Husen Baba, on the other hand, builds AZMAN Perfumes on stories, materials, and collaborations with independent perfumers.
OH MY SHISHA! therefore does not seem like a fragrance that chases a short-term tobacco, cherry, or gourmand trend. It fits into an existing narrative: AZMAN is interested in moments that leave an impression, in oud as a living material, and in perfume as sensual dramaturgy.
Perhaps that is the most fitting description of this house in the end. AZMAN does not sell a preconceived notion of what luxury should smell like. Husen Baba tries to create moments that one can later recognize by the scent.
And OH MY SHISHA! is one of those moments: a long night between tea and smoke, cherry and almond, honey and wood, warmth and darkness – before morning eventually breaks outside again.
