Behind the Fragrance

Carthusia CORALLIUM – Scented Candle

Capri in flames – where light smells of sea and silence

CORALLIUM is more than just a scented candle – it is a luminous gesture, capturing the essence of Capri in wax and flame. Encased in sandblasted glass engraved with the Carthusia emblem, this candle transforms any room into a place filled with salt air, citrus groves, and Mediterranean stillness. Part of the Domus Collection, CORALLIUM isn’t a decorative object – it’s an experience: timeless, atmospheric, and steeped in the soul of the island.

The composition – citrus, resin & aromatic depth

The fragrance opens with a vibrant blend of bergamot and sweet Italian mandarin – as radiant as morning light on Capri’s cliffs. Bay leaves bring a sharp, herbal greenness, contrasted with the balsamic warmth of myrrh. The heart evolves with patchouli, white cedar, and a soft marine breeze – like walking barefoot through sun-warmed pines by the sea. At the base, sage, musk, and oakmoss ground the scent in earthiness and calm. This long-lasting candle doesn’t overwhelm – it gently surrounds You.

Carthusia – The perfumed soul of Capri

The story of Carthusia dates back to 1380, when monks at the Carthusian Monastery of San Giacomo created a floral water to honor Queen Joanna of Anjou. After three days, the water had transformed into a mysterious and unforgettable scent. A monk skilled in alchemy traced its origin to the Garofilium Silvestre Caprese – a wild carnation native to Capri. That moment became the island’s first perfume. Rediscovered in 1948 by the then-prior, the original formulas were passed to a Northern Italian chemist with papal permission – and Carthusia was reborn.

Today, Silvio Ruocco leads the brand, having revived it in 1998. With his daughter Virginia Ruocco, who now directs marketing, Carthusia remains deeply rooted in Capri’s culture – yet internationally respected for preserving its intimate, artisanal production methods and unique olfactory storytelling.

Capri – History and beauty in one island

Capri, located in the Gulf of Naples, has long inspired emperors, poets, and artists. Roman Emperor Tiberius ruled from the island in his later years, building majestic villas atop its cliffs. Its iconic Faraglioni rocks, the mystical Blue Grotto, and lush Mediterranean gardens create a landscape that feels suspended in time. Capri is more than a destination – it’s a living legend, and Carthusia distills its spirit into every candle and scent.
