It's no wonder that Master Perfumer Alberto Morillas is the first perfumer in history to receive the Fragrance Foundation's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. His lifelong collaboration with research and development chemists and his encyclopedic knowledge of the history of perfume allow him to combine innovative natural techniques with revolutionary synthetic molecules. In this way, he has been able to create true works of art, many of which he has patented. Yet even he humbly admits his imperfection, pointing instead to the creative power of true passion: "Even when we have learned everything there is to know, there are still doubts. A formula is like a well-written sentence: there are thousands of beautiful words to choose from, but what makes them stand out is the emotion with which they are put together.”
Blessed with an inquisitive nature, Alberto grew up in Seville and was always encouraged to try things out and explore new things with curiosity. His parents were sophisticated and elegant, as were their clothes. The courtyard of his parents' house captured scents like a perfume bottle. Young Alberto delighted in the everyday smells that rose into the air from the fountain, the loquats, the clean laundry and the beautiful garden full of lush jasmine bushes. The focus of his many travels was usually the sea. Memories of the fresh breeze, the unforgettable smell of the Atlantic and the hidden secrets of the sea still move him today.
With a smile on his face, Alberto remembers a time when, as a young man, he spent his holidays in a phone booth to keep up to date with an important project. He sent his children to buy sweets so that he could use the change to extend the remaining time of the phone call. Alberto's three children, now grown up, have chosen a different career path than their father, despite their inherited gift for a keen sense of smell. "You have to have an innate passion for creation. It's a calling. You have to love it, love it and... love it." Although Alberto's heart belongs to Andalusia, his life's work took him to Geneva, where his desk now stands in the middle of his laboratory. As a young man, he realized that behind every fragrance there is a designer. "If a fashion designer is not able to touch and experience the fabric with his hands, that would be... unthinkable."
He draws a lot of his inspiration from the environment that surrounds the ingredients for his fragrances. He cannot imagine ever doing it any other way. Since he has always looked to the future, "perhaps too much!", there is little time for sleep. There is too much to do, too much inspiration to gather. From strolling through his beloved garden with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in hand to watching tigers in India, nothing stops a truly creative mind, not even the end of the day.
The elegant gentleman among perfumers, Alberto Morillas, has not only created many famous fragrances for renowned collections, but now also presents his own fragrance collection under the name "Mizensir".
