ATARATMA – Scents for the Soul: Modern Perfumery Between India, London and Grasse
ATARATMA LONDON is a British niche perfume house that brings together Indian fragrance traditions, contemporary haute perfumery and exceptionally high-quality raw materials. Founded by Ada Panday, whose Indian heritage and passion for perfume and jewellery strongly shape the identity of ATARATMA, the brand reflects a deeply personal vision of modern luxury. Its name combines “Attar”, the traditional term for fragrance or perfume oil, with the Sanskrit word “Atma”, meaning soul. The philosophy of the house is therefore perfectly expressed in its motto: Scents for the Soul.
For ATARATMA, perfume is far more than a beautiful accessory. Fragrance is intended to evoke emotions, awaken memories and create a connection between body, mind and surroundings. The brand draws inspiration from Indian culture, Ayurveda, rituals, healing plants, flowers, woods, spices and incense materials. These centuries-old influences are not interpreted nostalgically, but translated into a contemporary language through modern fragrance research and European perfumery.
Four Collections, Four Emotional Worlds
The fragrance universe of ATARATMA is divided into four collections, each centred around a distinct intention. ANANDA represents happiness and joy, KAMA explores love, sensuality and desire, ZAKRA embodies strength and inner power, while ATMA focuses on balance and spirituality.
This gives ATARATMA a distinctive position within modern niche perfumery. Its fragrances are not defined solely by traditional olfactory families, but also by emotion, atmosphere and the experience they create on the skin.
The Perfumers Behind ATARATMA
For the creation of its fragrances, ATARATMA works with an international team of renowned perfumers from the IFF environment in Grasse: Nelly Hachem-Ruiz, Paul Guerlain, Fanny Bal, Tanguy Guesnet and Caroline Dumur. The creative direction of the fragrance projects is led by Claire Sokell Thompson.
One particularly fascinating name is Paul Guerlain, grandson of the legendary Jean-Paul Guerlain, the last family perfumer of the historic House of Guerlain. Paul Guerlain does not work for Maison Guerlain, however, but has developed his own contemporary path as a perfumer at IFF. At ATARATMA, one of France’s most important perfumery legacies therefore meets a young British brand with strong Indian roots.
Fanny Bal, Nelly Hachem-Ruiz, Tanguy Guesnet and Caroline Dumur likewise represent a modern generation of perfumers who combine natural ingredients, innovative aroma molecules and advanced perfumery technologies. Each fragrance is given its own individual identity rather than being forced into a uniform house formula.
LMR Naturals – When Raw Material Quality Makes the Difference
High-quality natural ingredients from LMR Naturals by IFF play an important role in the compositions of ATARATMA. Originally founded in Grasse in 1983 as Laboratoire Monique Rémy, LMR is now regarded as one of the most respected specialists in natural perfume ingredients.
The difference in quality begins with the origin of the raw material itself. Jasmine is not simply jasmine, patchouli is not simply patchouli and vetiver is not simply vetiver. Origin, soil, climate, botanical variety, harvest time and processing can significantly influence the final olfactory profile. LMR therefore works closely with producers and cultivation partners while placing strong emphasis on traceability, controlled processing and consistently high quality.
Modern extraction and fractionation techniques add another dimension. They allow particularly desirable facets of a natural material to be highlighted while rougher or less attractive nuances can be reduced. The result is a natural ingredient with exceptional clarity, precision and depth.
A good example is the use of so-called Heart or Coeur qualities. In these materials, a natural raw ingredient is further fractionated to concentrate particularly valuable olfactory facets. A Patchouli Heart, for example, can preserve the characteristic woody, earthy and subtly fruity qualities of patchouli while reducing heavier or more camphoraceous aspects. The result feels more refined, modern and controlled without losing its natural identity.
This quality of raw material is essential to the character of a sophisticated niche perfume. True quality is not defined by strength or concentration alone, but by texture, depth, evolution and the precision of the individual ingredients.
Nature Meets Modern Fragrance Technology
ATARATMA does not regard natural and synthetic ingredients as opposites. Instead, the fragrances are shaped by the precise interaction of both worlds. Natural materials bring complexity and depth, while modern aroma molecules can provide transparency, projection, structure or entirely new olfactory effects.
The combination of LMR Naturals, the technological expertise of IFF and the creative work of internationally recognised perfumers defines the contemporary signature of ATARATMA. Materials such as sandalwood, patchouli, jasmine, neroli, ylang-ylang, saffron, vetiver, resins and spices are not merely used in a traditional way, but reinterpreted through a modern olfactory perspective.
Extrait de Parfum with High Concentration
The fragrances of ATARATMA feature perfume oil concentrations of approximately 25 to 30 percent, placing them within the Extrait de Parfum category. Yet the brand does not pursue sheer volume or aggressive projection. Instead, its perfumes are designed to develop with intensity and longevity while creating a distinctive aura close to the skin.
The fragrance oils are hand-blended in Grasse before being further matured and bottled. ATARATMA uses naturally fermented alcohol derived from sustainably cultivated French sugar beet. The perfumes are vegan and cruelty-free and are made without added colourants, parabens or phthalates.
