The Origins: A Fragrant Legend Since 1380

The story of Carthusia begins with a legend that could only emerge from Italy. In 1380, the Prior of the San Giacomo Charterhouse on Capri prepared a bouquet of the island’s most fragrant blooms to welcome Queen Joanna of Anjou. Days later, he noticed the water in which the flowers had stood had taken on a mesmerizing scent. A monk, intrigued by this phenomenon, began to create what became the island’s first perfume – Garofilium Silvestre Caprese, the earliest root of what would one day become Carthusia.

Ancient Formulas, Reborn Icons

In 1948, these ancient recipes were rediscovered in the monastery’s archives. A prior commissioned a chemist from Piedmont to recreate them in a small lab on Capri, and Carthusia was born. Since then, each perfume has been crafted by hand, using natural ingredients sourced directly from the island whenever possible: wild rosemary, carnations from local gardens, myrtle from Mount Solaro. The brand’s original compositions were respectfully reinterpreted by master perfumer Laura Tonatto, blending tradition with style and precision.
